Straight talk
A screening is not a diagnosis
What you might expect to hear
“We screened you for glaucoma and you do not have it.”
What is actually true
A screening sorts people into those who need a closer look and those who do not, on the evidence available in half an hour. It is not the same act as a diagnosis and it does not have the same certainty behind it.
Why
Every screening test in medicine misses some people and worries others unnecessarily, and the ones used in an eye examination are no exception. A normal set of results today means nothing was found today. It does not mean nothing is there, and it does not mean nothing will be there next year — which is the entire argument for coming back rather than for relaxing.
What we do instead
What we will tell you is what was measured, what the numbers were, whether they have changed since last time, and whether that is a reason to be looked at by somebody else. That is a finding and a destination. It is not a verdict.

Come in and let us look properly
A screening finding is the start of a conversation, not the end of one. Book the examination that follows it up.
