About Woodside Eye Care

An independent optometry practice on 61st Street, with three examination lanes, an optician's bench, and a frame room you are welcome to browse without an appointment.

Woodside Eye Care opened on 61st Street in 2009. It has three examination lanes, a frame room you can browse without an appointment, and an optician's bench behind it where most repairs happen in the time it takes to stand there.

Appointments are booked here, on this site, and the fee for every one of them is published before you choose it. The practice speaks English, Spanish, Bengali, Nepali and Tagalog, and will book somebody who speaks your language where it can.

How it works

Three doors, and which one you want

The reason an optometry practice can feel like two different businesses: an examination is a health appointment and a pair of glasses is a purchase. Both happen here, kept honest about which is which.

The full check: how you see, and how your eyes are.

An eye examination

Most people come for this and have not had one for longer than they think. It covers how well you see at distance and near, how your eyes work together, the pressure inside them, and the health of the front and the back of each eye. You leave with a written prescription whether or not you buy anything here.

Forty-five minutes, and longer the first time.

What this involves

A red eye, a sudden change, a knock, something in it.

Something is wrong

We keep time free every day for eyes that cannot wait until next week. Ring rather than book online, because the right answer is sometimes to send you straight past us. A sudden loss of sight, a curtain across your vision or a flash of light with new floaters is an emergency room, today, not an appointment.

Same day where we can, twenty-five minutes.

What this involves

The frame room, the lens bench, and the fitting.

Glasses and contact lenses

Four house collections, from children's flexible frames to hand-finished acetate and titanium, with the lens options and coatings priced separately so you can see what you are choosing. Browse without an appointment, bring a prescription from anywhere, and come back as often as you like to have them adjusted.

Half an hour with the optician, no appointment needed to browse.

What this involves

Opening hours

When you can come

Wednesday runs late for people who cannot take a morning off, and Saturday is the busiest day of the week, so a Saturday appointment is usually made a fortnight ahead. The frame room is open the whole time the practice is, and you do not need an appointment to look.

How these photographs were made. Every photograph on this site was generated rather than taken. Nobody in the portraits is a real person, no frame in the catalogue exists, and the rooms were never built. How it was done, and the rules the pictures had to follow, is on its own page.

How every photograph on this site was actually made

See it before you decide

Come in and look at the frame room, no appointment needed, or book an eye examination.
