Your prescription, and what it is

Yours, written down, and yours to take anywhere.

  • forty-five minutes (+fifteen minutes first visit)
  • $145

The prescription is the output of the examination and it belongs to the person it describes. You get a copy at the end of the appointment whether or not you buy anything here, you do not have to ask for it, and you may take it to any other practice or retailer you like. A practice that makes that difficult is telling you something.

What this includes

  • A written spectacle prescription at the end of every examination, unasked
  • The date it was written and how long it is reasonable to rely on it
  • Your pupillary distance, which a lens cannot be made without
  • A separate contact lens prescription where you have been fitted for lenses
  • A plain reading of what the numbers on it mean, if you want one

What this is not

  • A spectacle prescription cannot be used to order contact lenses
  • An old prescription is not evidence that the eye is still healthy

Comprehensive eye examination

forty-five minutes (add fifteen minutes for a first visit)

The full examination, with a written prescription at the end of it.

Anybody who has not had one in a year or two, or whose sight has changed.
