Children's vision

An examination that does not need a child to read letters aloud.

  • forty minutes (+ten minutes first visit)
  • $125

A child does not know what normal looks like and will not report blurred sight, because it is the only sight they have had. Everything in a children's examination can be done with pictures, shapes, matching games and lights, and none of it requires the child to speak or to read. A child who will not co-operate on the day is a child we see again next week.

What this includes

  • Vision measured with pictures or matching rather than letters
  • Whether the two eyes are pointing at the same thing
  • Whether one eye is being ignored, which is the finding that matters most and shows least
  • The focusing effort a child is making to see the board
  • The health of both eyes
  • A conversation with you about what to watch for at home

What this is not

  • A school vision screening is not this, and passing one is not a reason to skip it
  • We do not assess reading difficulty or learning disability; those need people who are not us
