Glaucoma screening and monitoring

The one that takes sight without symptoms until it is late.

  • thirty-five minutes (+ten minutes first visit)
  • $105

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve slowly and from the outside of the visual field inward, so it is well advanced before anybody notices a gap. Nothing hurts. Three measurements together — the pressure, the field, and the appearance of the nerve — are worth far more than any one of them, and all three are worth most when there is a set from last year to lay them beside.

A screening is not a diagnosis. A screening sorts people into those who need a closer look and those who do not. It is not a diagnosis, and a normal result today means nothing was found today.

What we will tell you is what was measured, what the numbers were, whether they have changed since last time, and whether that is a reason to be looked at by somebody else. That is a finding and a destination. It is not a verdict.

What this includes

  • The pressure inside each eye
  • A map of how far out to the sides each eye sees
  • Images of the optic nerve and the layer of fibres around it
  • The angle where fluid drains, looked at directly
  • Your family history, which is the strongest thing you can tell us

What this is not

  • A screening finds people who should be looked at more closely; it is not a diagnosis
  • The diagnosis and the treatment of glaucoma belong to an ophthalmologist, and we refer
  • Sight already lost to it does not come back, which is the whole argument for looking early
