Most dry eye is not a shortage of tears but a poor oily layer on top of them, made by small glands in the lid margins. The tears evaporate before they should, and the eye waters in protest, which is why a watering eye is so often a dry one. The assessment looks at the glands rather than only at the surface.
What this includes

- A stain that shows where the surface is unhappy

What this is not
