Myopia management

Slowing how fast a child's short sight is getting worse.

Short sight in childhood usually gets worse year on year, because the eye is growing slightly too long. Ordinary glasses make the world sharp and do nothing to that growth. Myopia management uses particular spectacle lenses, particular contact lenses or a prescribed drop to slow it, and the honest description of what it does is on its own page, because it is the most oversold thing in this trade.

What myopia management does not do. Myopia management slows how fast a child's short sight gets worse. It does not stop it, reverse it or cure it, and a child on a programme will still need glasses.

This is the most oversold thing in optometry, and it is oversold precisely because it works — there is real evidence behind the main approaches, which makes the exaggeration easy and makes it worse. A slowed rate is a genuinely valuable thing: it is the difference between where a prescription ends up at twenty and where it would have ended up. It is not a cure, and a child on a programme will still need glasses.

What this includes

  • The length of the eye measured and written down, so next year's can be compared with it
  • The prescription, which is a poorer measure of progress than the length is
  • A conversation about time outdoors and reading distance, which are free and do something
  • The options, with what is actually known about each
  • A review every six months while the eye is still growing

  • It slows the change; it does not stop it, reverse it, or cure short sight
  • It cannot undo the growth that has already happened
  • There is no treatment here that makes an adult's short sight go away
